    Random Rant
    Friday, August 28, 2009

RANDOM RANT AHEAD YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Urgh, I'm here to gripe again haha. Okay now, I have very few pet peeves. I consider myself to be a generally tolerant person. I'm not even much of a grammar nazi. However a few things I absolutely cannot stand are a) when people cannot pronounce things correctly (enunciation, diction, anybody?) and b) when people randomly use words that they think they know the meaning of but actually don't.

As a general rule, (because I do try not to be a hypocrite) if I can't pronounce the word, I don't use it in my daily speech. (though I do use lots of words I can't pronounce in my essays >_>) If you want to use it in your daily speech, please GOOGLE 'pronunciation of [enter word here]'. It will take less than half a minute and will prevent me (or any other pronunciation nazi) from jumping down your throat.

I suppose there are lots of examples of a) so I'll leave it to your imagination. We are in Singapore anyway, it shouldn't be too hard right. But for b) I suppose I was a little vague. Good example: using the phrase RSVP. I dislike it when people go 'Please RSVP'. RSVP (which stands for 'répondez s'il vous plaît' - again, GOOGLE if you want to know how to pronounce it) already means 'Please respond', so putting an extra 'please' in front is actually redundant. If you're gonna be atas and use French phrases, do find out what they mean first. If not, be like a normal person and just say something like 'Acknowledge once received' or something. (Geog Soc kids will probably be very familiar with that phrase, seeing as I constantly use it at the end of my emails and SMSes to the entire group)

But gah, okay rant over. It's just rather annoying to see examples of this everywhere I go. I mean, most of us only know two languages, and seeing that we kind of stink at one (Chinese. Or at least I do anyway), I believe the least we can do is to try to be a hell lot better at the other one (English) instead of going about like a typical Singaporean for the rest of our days. Yes okay I'm done. Rahhh.

Dear friends, we have to do this together someday alright? (:

    Reality check
    Wednesday, August 26, 2009

You’ve got to accept the fact that life isn’t a fairy tale; things aren’t always happily ever after. Things like magic wishes, Prince Charmings, and true love don’t happen in real life. Magic wishes come from money, Prince Charming’s a shallow idiot with a bad haircut and overpriced clothes. And true love? Ha! True love is one-sided, Ace. You love him, he loves someone else. He loves you, you love someone else. Never quite works out, does it? So you end up with some actor pretending to be your true love. Real considerate of someone to let you know reality was like that before being thrown into it. “If you wish, it’ll happen.” Well, wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up faster. Welcome to reality. Enjoy your stay.

    - Gilmore Girls
    (reality check, much?)

“ I’m selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I’m out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best. „

(doesn't she make so much sense?)

    For you :3

Freaking cute image please. Totally. Anyway this post is for one of my favouritest girls ever, Ms Tan Yeehui! So yayyy. Me likey when people bug me to blog cuz it kinda makes me feel like at least people do read my musings and my crap yeah.

Prelims are (almost) over! Only one more paper and thats next Monday so its temporary bum time til then I don't care muahahaaa. Been catching up on Project Runway Season 6 and my fan fiction. I realise I change pairings oh so often but I guess thats the beauty of fan fiction right? (: OMG I have so many dates to go out on with my dearest girls and my boys after my prelims so pretty psyched and can't wait!

It was so strange anyway, halfway through my Geog paper (physical geog, happened last thurs) I couldn't help but keep rewinding this Chuck/Blair scene from Gossip Girl; the one where he goes to Paris and Germany to get macaroons and stockings for her and there's this nice sweet awesome I-love-you scene when they meet again. Very random and NOT the best thing to think about when you're trying to describe a block of limestone.

Mostly spending my time now university farming and researching because I will try my best to /not/ stay in Singapore for my university education. Hope this statement doesn't come and bite me in the ass this time next year >_>

    Quotes!

Awesome quote taken from a tumblr website:-

Who wants the perfect guy? Not me. I don’t want anyone perfect. I don’t want anyone normal, that's just boring. I want someone weird. I want someone unpredictable. I want someone who lets things slide and who loves to laugh and makes me laugh. I want someone who will be crazy about me, and isn’t afraid to let everyone know it. I want him to be able to tell me to shut the hell up when I am bugging him. I want someone who challenges me, in every way. I want someone who puts up with my shit, but isn't a pushover. I want someone who pisses me off, but I can never be mad at. But perfect? That’s one thing I never want. Maybe just perfect for me. „

Bestest youtube video ever, with Anastasia's At The Beginning in French (C'est le Début) and clips from Marie Antoinette which I just finished watching! Borrowed it ages ago from Hwee but never got around to actually watching it thanks to prelims but since I've a bit of a break now, might as well (:

I'll be there when the world stops turning
I'll be there when the storm is through
In the end I wanna be standing
    At the beginning with you.

    Awkwarddd

Okay this is random but I am currently having one of the more awkward MSN conversations of my life. Definitely. (does the ubiquitous awkward turtle/awkward turkey hand motions)

    Halfway through!
    Thursday, August 20, 2009

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'cause it doesn't make a difference if we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

    Woah, we're halfway there
    Woah, livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
    Woah, livin' on a prayer

I THOUGHT THIS SONG WAS REALLY APT FOR PRELIMS! But thus far we're halfway through prelims and I have absolutely no comment on the papers yet. >_> Hahaha but 5 papers down and 4 more to go so we're halfway there! (and the good Lord knows we're living on a prayer >.<) Less than two weeks more, we can make it (:

    OMG!

About nine hours til the first prelim paper, which happens to be GP.
I have never been so freaked before in my entire life, though I think this feeling might be increased tenfold hundredfold for the actual A Levels.
Good luck and all the best to all ACSians suffering the same fate as I tomorrow (:

YES BLOGGER IS WORKING AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DAYS. (As is Facebook. Probably some Internet slowdown, Dad mentioned some stuff going on in Taiwan.)

Haha ok I found the above comic kind of cute, 'least I know I'm not the only one fighting my way through that novel (which is admittedly rather good, but not something I'd care to read over and over). Thinking a lot about The Future (how vague) lately, wonder where I'll be a year from now and if I'll be any different.

Hmm. Late nights are the best times to feel pensive, especially if my current view is of The Bro's fuzzy head which is sticking up from his blanket just a scant metre away.
(I know, no link. Its rather adorable though, somewhat.)

This song's playing through my head now:-
Let me light up the sky, light it up for you
Let me tell you why I would die for you
Let me light up the sky.

    paul says:

    estella's a mean bitch
    havisham's the queen bitch
her relatives are all mega asses

People who have been in my room before (or rather, OUR room seeing that my brother and I still share one) may notice that apart from the many many stuffed toys, various graphic novels and ubiquitous Final Fantasy/Man Utd posters littering the area, there is also a little mini pink bookshelf thing on our shared table.

Said pink bookshelf used to be a dumping ground for our many Econs textbooks (over the years, we have accumulated about SIX. Yes, I kid you not. I effectively only need two actually) and his random university textbooks, with the occasional overseas/local university prospectus shoved in between the hulking masses of bound paper.

However, people who know our parents well enough (my mother in particular) should know that on her days off, she doesn't usually rest or go out like a normal person. No, she cleans. Somewhat obsessively. Her usual target happens to be our room.

Well, suffice it to say, all the above stuff happens to be packed away in cupboards somewhere, and she has ensured that I will NEVER need to leave my bed again to study for the A Levels. (Somewhat good, since I usually mug on my bed.) She has happily packed all my Geog and Econs bound notes, both my Econs textbooks AND all my Lit texts into the pink bookshelf thing. Its a rather intimidating sight, I'll have you know, all these black binder things staring out at you.

Perhaps she hopes that diffusion will take place or something. That would be (for all you people who have forgotten your Science) the net transport of molecules from a region of higher concentration (i.e the notes) to one of lower concentration (i.e my brain) by random molecular motion. Hurhurhurrr. >_>

    Okay back to work! (:

From an article called "The Six Biggest Dating Mistakes Women Make", which was rather entertaining for an evening read, I happened to pick up on this interesting fact (number 3 on the list, by the way):-

They think a guy will always like them if he just gets to know them.
"A guy knows right away if he's attracted to you or not. There's no warming up. Men are microwaves, women are Crockpots. Women heat up very slowly. They take in information; they decipher it and download it onto their computer. Men know in one second, yes or no."

Any thoughts or opinions on this, guys? (:
(Click on the article name, you will be forwarded to the actual article. I managed to link it on blogspot, I rule!)

(After telling Junyi my planned major/minor for university)

Junyi: Be prepared to meet no men in any of your classes! :D

    Yuck

    Random fact of the day:-
Researchers discovered that women adjust their menstrual cycles when exposed to the scent of a male underarm.

Now, I'm not one to question the professionals but... Ew. Its an interesting fact though, I guess.

Went out after school today with the BMF who is flying off on Monday ahhh ): We ate at Breko's and had a lovely talk and I felt mildly sad but also really psyched for him. Will miss you, BMF!

    Musings of the day:-
It is possibly seen as a platitude of sorts by many, the adage goes that it is the little things in life that bring one pleasure. For example, it makes me feel damn awesome whenever I look at my phone clock and it reads "13:37". Or perhaps a pang of nostalgia whenever it reads "11:11". Cheap thrill, I know. Haha (: For that brief shining moment, there is happiness.

    I always catch the clock it's 11:11
And now you want to talk
    It's not hard to dream
    You'll always be my Konstantine.

    Sigh

Got sick of mugging, or trying to mug, and went around uni farming again. (Its both a stress reliever and a motivator, kind of like a slap in the face saying IF YOU SCREW UP YOUR PRELIMS YOU CAN'T GO OVERSEAS.) Imagine my surprise when I saw this.

The five undergraduate Claremont Colleges are commonly referred to as the "5Cs." In mid 2008, the Consortium began talks with the National University of Singapore to build a sixth undergraduate Claremont College, off-site, in Singapore. The partnership, expected to be announced in November 2008, will be the first of its kind for a liberal arts college.

...REAL OR FAKE? For the record, I am actually thinking about applying to one or two of the five Cs (you can go guess which ones if you're so boliao hahaha), so this actually came about as quite a shock. After some further farming, turns out that progress was made (i.e meetings and everything) in 2008 but thus far in 2009 not much I think.

THIS IS NOT THE FOURTH UNI, the fourth university is (I think) the Singapore Institute of Applied Technology or something like that, and apparently there's gonna be a new partnership somewhere else on this island with MIT.

So apparently, LACs might just be coming to Singapore now, as a part (not separate ah) of our very own NUS. Hurhurhurrr. Not that I'll be able to make it in time, seeing that I go to uni next year, but its interesting to see how freaking fast our education landscape has changed. Its really kind of freaky. At first it was just the fourth uni, then comes this MIT thing which I'm not too clear about cuz I'm not a wannabe engineering student, and possibly this LAC thing. Lol.

Okay back to studying. GEOGGG! Just a heads up on the uni thing. I also need to trim my uni list, its got like ten unis on it currently which is Very Expensive in app fees so I gotta trim down to like five or something. Hopefully. Hahaa.

While taking a break from studying, I managed to stumble across this! Ouran High School Host Club (the anime) has come up with an English version of their famous opening song Sakura Kiss, which makes for an excited and happy Tiff (:

    Kiss, kiss, fall in love!
    Hey, hey, hey
I see you come, I watch you go
You never seem to leave me though
So is this love or hate?
We'll see, you're making me crazy
Inside my dreams you're all I see
Well, all I see is you with me
Lady, maybe or host, I find I really don't mind
If I had to choose a rose in this garden of romance
Maybe we could take this chance
    Maybe you're my love!
And I would like to find a hand like yours to take my hand
    with one kiss
We could stop time and I'd fall in love with you
    Tomorrow's far away
Let's place our hope in today
    It's just you and me
    in a beautiful spring
and we'll always fall in love again
    Hey, hey
    Maybe you're my love!

For the record, the Jap version is the bomb and usually I'm not into dubs but this one is not bad! Can't wait for the FULL OFFICIAL mp3 to be out (: Now back to Econs, bah.

Btw had exciting fun times at NDP Preview yesterday, they had POLE DANCERS OMG wow they're so incredibly fit its scary haha (:
